SEASON-BY-SEASON MEMORIES

THE FOUR YEARS IN REVIEW

After a very tough, “character-building” and "coming together" initial season, MSC Strikers had a hat-trick of promotions. In successive seasons, MSC Strikers won promotion from Division 5, Division 4 and Division 3, which culminated in a goal five minutes from time in their final game, giving  MSC Strikers a 1-0 victory and promotion to Division 2.

Three successful seasons were then followed by three less successful seasons, even as the team often played beautiful football and dominated games. In the Fall of 1999, MSC Strikers were relegated from Division 2; in the Spring of 2000, MSC Strikers were relegated from Division 3; and in the Fall of 2000, MSC Strikers failed in their season finale to win promotion back to Division 3.

Sportsmanship; No fouling; no complaining; no whining; suck it in…

MSC Strikers, with three guest players, played in the Potomac Memorial Day Tournament, May 27-29, reaching the Semi-Finals before losing in a penalty shoot out.  Congratulations to the team for playing so well, and commiserations on the final result. Strikers 1 Freestate Storm 2

OVERVIEW OF MSC STRIKERS

MSC Strikers are a select U-12  boys travel team, playing their sixth season in the National Capital Soccer League (NCSL), in the Washington D.C. area. MSC Strikers play under the sponsorship of Montgomery Soccer Club (MSC), which is a part of Montgomery Soccer, Inc. (MSI). The team is coached by Glen Diaz and Errol Brathwaite.  The players live in Montgomery County, Maryland, primarily Bethesda, Silver Spring, Potomac, Gaithersburg & Germantown.

After an initial tough (but character-building!) "coming together" season, MSC Strikers  in successive seasons, won promotion from Division 5, Division 4 and Division 3.  In the Fall of 1999, MSC Strikers  were relegated from Division 2. In the Spring,of 2000, MSC Strikers are playing in Division 3 of the NCSL.

SUMMER 1997: FOUNDING OF MSC STRIKERS

In June, the first tryouts for the two new MSI-sponsored teams were held. After the team selections, the new players got to know each other (as did parents). Summer practices and scrimmages began as players were tried in various field positions.   Parents began taking on assignments. As the season neared, the players settled on a team name..."Strikers."

FIRST SEASON - FALL 1997

RECORD: 2 Wins, 2 Ties, 5 Losses.   Goals F:10-A:39

In the MSC Strikers's inaugural season, playing as  a U-10 boys team,  players were slotted into positions. Games were played seven-on-seven. Goals were ironically, smaller than players had been used to playing on non-select teams.

One of the season's strongest memories for both players and parents   is of a couple of crushing defeats in games played in the pouring rain in parts of Virginia far from home.  A post-season tournament played at the Polo grounds in Montgomery County seemed to epitomize much of the season, with MSC Strikers playing on fields, much of which were literally several inches under water.

If some of the seaon's results were less than stellar, the character of many of the players (and the coaches) became clear as they didn't let the results crush their spirits..

Team News: One player left during the season, after only a couple of games.  At the end of the season, two other players left.

BETWEEN SEASONS - WINTER 1997

Much of the team played the first session of indoor soccer at Corner Kick in Maryland.

     SECOND SEASON - SPRING 1998  (Division 5)

RECORD: 6 Wins, 1 Tie, 2 Losses. Goals: F:23-A:14  Final Position: 3rd  (Promoted)

With three players (Ricky, Greg & Jim) having left the team, three new players (Alvin, Daniel and Timo) joined the team. This was a far more successful season, which culminated in MSC Strikers winning promotion from Division 5.

SUMMER 1998 & PRE-SEASON

MSC Strikers took part in the Columbia Labor Day Tournament, reaching the final before losing in a hard-fought final.

THIRD SEASON - FALL 1998 (Division 4)

RECORD: 7 Wins, 0 Ties, 2 Losses. Goals F:24-A:11  Final Position: 2nd (Promoted)

Like everyone else in this (U-11) age group, the team had to adjust to going from playing 7 versus 7 to playing 11 versus 11; the fields were far longer; and the goals higher and wider. Two players (Jeremy and Tim) had left the team in the Summer, and six players had joined the team (John, Jimmy, Aldo, Adrian, Pierre and Paul) as the playing roster expanded..

After loosing their first two games of the season, including a first game, which they very clearly could and should have won, MSC Strikers went on to win their remaining seven games and win promotion out of Division 4.

INTER-SEASON: WINTER '98/SPRING '99

Most of the team played together in the two sessions of indoor soccer at Corner Kick.  In the first session, the team finished third (and were top goalscorers). In the second session, the team placed first in the U-11 Division, with a record of 7 wins and 1 defeat.

In the Spring 1999 pre-season, MSC Strikers (with several players missing, and several guest players from MSC Kickers) played in the Potomac U-11 boys tournament at Julius West school in Montgomery County.

FOURTH SEASON -  SPRING 1999 (Division 3)

RECORD: 6 Wins, 0 Ties, 3 Losses.  Goals: F:21-A:6   Final Position: 3rd (Promoted)

The season began with the question of how the team, after two successive promotion seasons, would do in the highly-competitive third division. After losing the first two games, in which despite having several players absent or injured, they could very easily have picked up at least a win and a tie, the likelihood of another successful, promotion-winning season, seemed remote.

The team however, won six out of their remaining seven games, including the final four games, and gained promotion after a nail-biting last game of the season, which they won with a goal five minutes from time. (Without knowing their rival teams' weekend results, the game ended with MSC Strikers not knowing if they had done enough to win promotion.).

In May, MSC Strikers, with three guest players (Kirby, Justin and Dylan - all of whom who are  part of MSC Strikers Fall 99 team) won their first tournament - The U-11 Boys Memorial Potomac Tournament. MSC Strikers won all five of their games in the process.

Two players, Timo and Aldo left the team at the end of this highly successful season, Timo to return to Germany.

GAME 1: LOST: Alex Lions 2 - MSC Strikers 1. (Half Time 1-2). MSC Strikers started the season missing several of their players through injuries and other absences and played their first game with no substitutes.  In their first game, the team played well, took an early lead and looked well worth their lead,  several times coming close to scoring additional goals, before conceding 2 rather unfortunate goals before half-time, and losing 2-1.

GAME 2:   LOST:   MSC Striker 0- FESC 1(Half Time 0-0).   In game two, MSC Strikers came up against FESC - the team they have probably played the most often. In a close-fought game, FESC scored the game's only goal, late in the second half.

GAME 3 WON: ABC United 0-MSC Strikers 4 (Half Time 2-0). MSC Strikers broke their season's duck with a convincing victory.

GAME 4 WONLRSC United 1-MSC Strikers 2. In a tough game, MSC Strikers came from behind to win 2-1.

GAME 5:  LOST: DC Devils 2 - MSC Strikers 0. (Half Time 0-1)   The team got off to a bad start by arriving at the wrong field. By the time, they got to the correct field, there was virtually no time for a warm up. DC Devils played well and with urgency, but this was again a game, MSC Strikers had chances to get something out of.

GAME 6:  WON:MSC Strikers 1- Chan Shockwave 0 (Half Time: 0-0). Missing a number of chances, MSC Strikers scored late in the game. coming into the game with a 2 and 2 record, this was a crucial victory.

GAME 7   WON: WIN Elite 0-MSC Strikers 5. (Half Time 2-0). In a game, played on a beautiful playing surface (the best experienced all season), the team once again missed a large number of chances, even as they scored the necessary goals to win the game.

GAME 8   WON:  MSC Strikers 6-Hern Riptide 0. MSC Strikers continued their surge, and continued their promotion push.

GAME 9WONMSC Strikers 1-BRYC Falcons 0. (Half time 0-0). With five minutes to go, needing victory to have a chance of promotion, MSC Strikers scored the vital goal in a game in which MSC Strikers did not play up to their optimum performance.

FALL '99 DIVISION 2 HIGHLIGHTS

After a brilliant opening game, MSC Strikers went through a series of narrow defeats and frustrating ties, and were relegated at the end of the season! (Further details to come!)

The team saw three new players join the team - Kirby, Justin and Dylan.
