MARCH 2002

March 22: Alex Suter - alexsuter@wanadoo.fr  Hi there Stumbled across your website by sheer accident. I spent 2 very memorable stays in Kfar Blum, Feb-May 1988 and then again when London life got too much for me, again in 1989. I worked with Zahavar in the Hotel gardens; she gave me a real taste for it; the proof; I'm now a landscape gardener with my own company in Provence, France. Please remember me to her if anyone sees her. Fond memories of the volunteer bar and the " Boogie Room"!
Salut, Alex Suter (South Africa)

DECEMBER 2001

Dec 13: From Yvonne Mehler: My name is Yvonne Mechler from Sydney, Australia and I was one of the volunteers on Kfar Blum from (June 93 until Sept 94 ) I was considered almost an Israeli as I had been there that long and almost didn't come home. I knew alot of people and many kibbutzniks whom I grew very fond of. I still keep in contact with Hadas Oron. Kfra Blum was truly unforgettable and an experience I will never forget, even as much as sleeping in those bomb shelters, wherever in the world would you do that on an everyday basis.... Looking for anyone over that time I was there, met heaps of people and made some friends for life.
My email address is: yvonnealex@hn.ozemail.com.au  So whoever remembers me write soon!!!! Regards Yvonne Mechler

Hii  My name is Jock Shaw. I was a volunteer in 1976-1977. I met my Dutch wife Ineke in Kfar Blum and we are still married 24 years in November 14th. We have 4 children. Ruben aged 22, Tabitha aged 19, Daniel aged 17 and Naomi aged 14.
I shared a room with Don Spicehandler from New York. It was such a memoriable time of my life. Next year we might try and come over for our 25th wedding anniversary.
I remember Yaffa as head of the volunteers and Yehuda who was quite old and was one of the founders. David Weinstein who was head of gardening and his son also. I expect David Weinstein would have passed on now or else he would be very old. He had quite a temper, but he allway's was fair to me. He really cared about me as a young fellow out there on my own and gave me many prep-talks:-)
Just now we pray for the peace of Israel and hope this awful time in the world will not be used as an excuse for Hamas and their ilk to attack Israel. For these precarious times we wish you all,
Shalom,  Jock Shaw Arnhem, The Netherlands

March 19: Jim Barlow. Hello, and thanks for the web site that invites Kfar Blum Ulpan members. My name is Jim Barlow, I went to Israel between my junior and senior year of agricultural school in California to take a rest from school and to make my own study of both international agriculture and Middle East political science. I could have been a volunteer, but chose the Ulpan program, even though I am not Jewish and had no intention of living in Israel, so that I could come to understand the people, culture and history from inside the Hebrew language.
I was in the Ulpan class of October 1970 to May of 1971 when I was 21 and 22 years old. I met fabulous people in my group and among the Kibbutzniks and have clear memories of the whole experience as if
it was only a few years ago. I now live in Gilroy, California, near San Jose, and my email is jim@soilweb.com
In regard to finding everyone who was a volunteer on in the Ulpan, have you tried to get the original rosters of past groups from Kfar Blum  administration archives? Shalom for now, Jim Barlow, President Soilweb.com, Inc.

FEBRUARY 2001

Feb: 21 - My name is Caroline White carpetcal@hotmail.com  from England and was first on the Kibbutz in Feb 1999 for over 8 months as the lifeguard then returned last summer for several weeks.
Just to let you know some news, last summer I was accepted on scholarship to the Hebrew university of Jerusalem for an intensive Ulpan and I am still studying Hebrew in Manchester university in the Uk.  My next visit to Israel will be in June when I will be unofficially making Aliya (!) as I shall be staying Haifa for a year and a half as a compulsary part of my degree course.  I then have to return to manchester for a year after that and then I shall officially be making Aliya! I would just like to say that my experience at Kfar Blum was life changing: my whole path of life has changed and two years ago I would not have even dreamed of speaking fluent Hebrew today, and that is partly due to the kindness of some Kibbutz members who really helped me.  I had always dreamed of making Aliya but my long experience at Kfar Blum reaffirmed all wishes to make the move.I hope to hear from you soon, and please pass on greetings particularly to Eddie Stern, the family Israeli (Noam) and to Amitai Rubin. Thanks Caroline White

DECEMBER 2000

Dec 26: Shalom!I was a volunteer at Kfar Blum about 10 years ago (1990/91). My name is Daniel Ravasz and I`m a Hungarian and German citizen, currently living in Fribourg, Switzerland. I treasure this time very deeply in my heart, for I had a wonderful time here. Since I was only 16 I might have been the youngest. I worked in the kitchen, in the pool and in the garden next to the hotel. There was a little bench outside, next to the kitchen, just at the road to the volunteer housing area. Sitting there at night and looking at the stars was heaven. Sharing moments with friends. I had a good relationship to some members, such as my friend Amitais grandparents ( Sundek (?) Family ) and Nili Porat. I wish I could go back and meet all of them again, and myself as well, someone who was less bitter than. Well I might have forgotten some of the names, but not the warmth that was present. So wishing you well and maybe until someday.
Thanks, Daniel Ravasz e-mail: danrav@lycos.com

November 26: HI MY NAME IS KARL AND I HAD A GOOD TIME ON KFAR BLUM FROM APRIL UNTIL THE END OF JUNE 1990.  I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM SOME OF THE GOOD PEOPLE I MET THERE. I AM ICELANDIC AND WAS THERE WITH MY FRIEND GULLI.  MY E MAIL IS kallite@simnet.IS

November 18: Bruce Meshwork, Volunteer 1973-1974 Currently Los Angeles: BOMBOLEI@AOL.COM  Having been at Kfar Blum in 1973, including the Yom Kippur War and the "mini" war of attrition afterwards, I find my thoughts going back to that time because of the current events in Israel. The only written record I have from that time are a few letters home (including one that I was in the middle of writing just as a flight of Syrian Migs flew over and all hell broke loose) Does anybody who was on Kfar Blum have a journal or diary they kept during that war? I would be interested in reading such an account. Thanks Bruce Meshwork Bombolei@aol.com

I'm Beatriz Presser. I was in the Ulpan from Dec. 1972 - June 1973. I then married a kibbutznik - Ofer and lived on the Kibbutz for a few years. We now live in New York. We have two grown daughters and have recently visited Kfar Blum. So if anyone has any questions about the Kibbutz now you can e-mail me at: beapres@aol.com

Mitch Gerber This is a terrific Web site to come upon. I'm glad you're taking the considerable initiative to create it.    I was on Kfar Blum from June 1973 through January 1974. That was a pretty vivid time, and the experience still means a lot to me. Heck, more than a lot, but it'd take tears and laughter as well as words to describe what I mean.    Anyway, I'm originally from Buffalo (that's what got me to Kfar Blum in the first place -- to visit neighbors who'd made aliyah), and now live in Rockville, Md.  I'd have a thousand questions for anyone who's been to Kfar Blum since my time there. (The most important one is, What became of Yehuda Shagam, the coordinator of volunteers?)    Thanks again for your work on this site. I'm glad it's here. Best, Mitch Gerber gerber@chronicle.com

November 3: From Tom Witt: I was in the Kfar Blum ulpan from July 1974 to January l975. I've heard from a few of my old ulpan or volunteer friends over the years.    Here is the latest information I have. My old ulpan boss, Tova Ben David, and her husband Mark Cohen settled in the Atlanta area and have 2 sons. Eric and Barbara Hall got married in l976 and live in Philadelphia. They have 2 daughters. Eli(Geer)Maner married a teacher at the Wright State, in Dayton, Ohio. Linda (Bardon) Cain got married and lives in Cincinnati. Her husband is a lawyer. Sheila (Friedlander) Birkett is married and lives in Otego, in western New York State. Gail Konig, last I heard, was still living in Brooklyn, New York. Bruce Armstrong runs his own business back home in Byron, Illinois.
       Ross Clayton
, Ricky Phillip, and Vivienne Constad all are living and working in England. For quite a while Ross worked for The Economist magazine. Now I think he has his own firm. Vivienne has been involved in the clothing industry.Howard Berkowitz got married, spent some time in the Navy, and now lives in New Jersey. Rosalind (Daufman)Luper is married and living in England. Gaye Willis is a nurse in Australia. Yasuko and Naoki Kato now have 3 kids and live in Japan. Their oldest daughter Yuki is attending college in California.
As for me; after I came back from Israel in l975, I spent the next 6 years in the Navy. Most of the time I was the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz. In l978, the Nimitz made a port visit to Haifa, and I was able to go back to Kfar Blum for a visit.
Oh, before I forget; last time I heard from my old roommate, Philip Lamptey, he was working in the cattle and livestock business back home in Ghana. Last time I heard from former kibbutz member Wendy Perell, she had been traveling quite a bit. She spent some time working at a hotel in the Northwest territories of Canada, and also had jobs in New Zealand and a few other places. I hope this information is helpful. I don't have any e mail addresses for the folks I listed, except Eli Maner. But I do have regular mail addresses for most of them. If there are any that would like, please let me know.  ( Tom Witt...Middletown, Connecticut)
