PHILOSOPHY & EXPECTATIONS -  PLAYERS, COACHES & PARENTS

(ORIGINALLY POSTED FALL 2004 - BUT PHILOSOPHY REMAINS UNCHANGED)

Welcome to the Fall 2004 soccer season. We hope that everybody has a very enjoyable and an at least moderately successful season.  This new “Hoover United” team is the result  of the merger of two “depleted” teams,  most of whose players attend Hoover MS. This will be a somewhat transitional season as the girls learn to play with each other while the two coaches learn about the new players. There are some playing changes: The roster has increased from 13 or 14 to around 18.  The girls go from playing 9 vs 9 to playing 11 vs 11. They’ll be playing with a #5 ball (the largest size).  And of course, this  is the year of Bar and Batmitzvahs, which might lead to player shortages.

PRACTICES & GAMES  Practices will be on Fridays from 4:00 to 5:00 pm at Wayside Elementary school. Please be on time to pick up your children. Practices are not going to run later than 5.00 pm.

GAMES    Please make every effort to be at games 15-20 minutes before kickoff time.  If your daughter is going to be absent, please let  John or me know.

CANCELLATIONS OF GAMES & PRACTICES  -  If weather leads to cancellation of practices or games, I will email everyone and try to post it on site.  Game cancellations will also be posted on MSI website www.msisoccer.org. (We might also set up a phone tree or have parental volunteers make calls.) If it’s pouring or lightning, we won’t practice.

There is no minimum level of skill needed to enjoy playing soccer. MSI welcomes everybody who wants to play - and guarantees everyone on the team playing time of at least half the game.  Every girl brings to the team different qualities and the team melds those different abilities.  The more soccer games they play (and the more they practice), the better they become.  The only "requirement" is that they should enjoy playing soccer.   The only thing the coaches ask of every player -- and request that the parents make sure their daughters understand -- is that when they comes to practices and games, they should be prepared to try their best; to listen to their coaches; and not to fool around.

Every coach, including the Hoover United coaches, obviously have their own approaches/idiosyncrasies, but the underlying approach should be that, while trying to make the players become better players , and to do as best they can as a team, soccer should ultimately be regarded as fun – a game - and all the girls should enjoy playing the world's most popular sport.    Basically, the children should take the games seriously, while they are playing; and they should not care at all, when the games are over.  And the coaches should care even less about the results than do the players (which of course is not always easy).  To be magnanimous in victory; to be calm and gracious in defeat.

The coaches  (as well as players and parents) don't scream at or argue with referees even  if they are clearly in the wrong.  We don't tolerate fouls. We don’t accept bad sportsmanship from the players (or  parents). We don't shout at, or criticize, or take off players when they make mistakes. We expect if one of the girls makes a mistake, that the other girls will console her; not critique or ridicule her. Soccer is a team sport.

Parental conduct is a major concern of MSI, and they strongly penalize teams whose parents do not conduct themselves appropriately. It should scarcely need stating but Parents must display good sportsmanship. They must shout only encouragement – not offer criticism. They must not issue instructions to anybody on the team about where to play or what to do – even to your own daughters.   Only the coaches should shout instructions to the girls (and even that should be limited) –My own biggest flaw as a coach, is excessively shouting at players to run forward or to get back.  However I don't shout instructions that they should pass or shoot, etc and I don’t critique them for errors.

It doesn't always work out exactly this way; but in theory, players will play in different positions.   However, we do generally do try to play people in their best  and/or favorite positions, if that fits within the team’s needs. To state the obvious: Not everyone can be the forward.  Additionally, if a player is good in several positions, and we need someone in a certain position, we will ask her to play at least part of the time there.

To conclude: We freely acknowledge that some of the players' parents may, in fact, actually be better coaches than the team's designated coaches.  However, as long as John and I are the coaches, please restrict your game-attendance role, to ensuring your daughter comes to practices and games; cheering, encouraging and if necessary, commiserating. And always encourage your daughters to be good sports - win or lose.

HOOVER UNITED - "RULES OF BEHAVIOR/CONDUCT"

Please make every effort to have your children attend games and practices. If they are sick, or going to be out of town, or have some other event to attend, that's not a problem, but it would be very helpful if you could let either me or Carol know.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO BE AT GAMES 15-20 Minutes before Kickoff.......Late-comers will probably not start the game (although they obviously will play).

It doesn't always work out exactly this way; but in theory, the players will play in different positions, in different games. This may slightly "hurt" the team's performance, but playing in different positions is beneficial to all the children and will make each of them, individually, a better player.

Parental conduct is a major concern of MSI, and they strongly penalize teams whose parents do not conduct themselves appropriately. It should scarcely need stating but Parents MUST display good sportsmanship, and shout ONLY encouragement - NOT criticism or instructions to anybody on the team, including their own children.  Only the coaches should shout instructions to the team (and even that should be limited.)

I freely acknowledge that some of the players' parents may, in fact, actually be better coaches than the team's designated coaches.  However, as long as Carol, Jacob and I are the coaches, please restrict your game-attendance role, to cheering everyone, and commiserating when our players make mistakes, or let in goals.  Please do NOT, during the game shout to your child - or to other children on the team - to do something, or play somewhere, contrary to what the coaches are telling them to do. And always encourage your daughters to be good sports whether we win or lose.

     SOCCER EXPECTATIONS

In the Fall of 2002, the roster size increased from 12 (13) to 15.  The team went from seven-a-side to nine-a-side....a goalie; 2 or 3 defenders; 3 or 4 midfielders;  2 attackers
We use a number #4 ball;  substitutes go on, only when the referee signals them to go on.
There are two 30 minute halves; with a 10 minute half-time break.  Referees are provided, so parents are no longer called on to referee games.
Everybody on the team plays for at least half the game (which will usually be two or more separate periods during the game).

The team gets 3 points for a win; 1 point for a tie; 0 points for a loss.
It doesn't always work out exactly that way, but in theory, the players will play in different positions, in different games. This may slightly "hurt" the team's performance, but it is beneficial to all the children and will make them individually better players, to play in different positions.

PARENTAL ROLE

The Parents and coaches from each team stand/sit on opposite sides of the field (Not behind the goal), with the home team, choosing sides.  Parents must stay away from the touch line; standing several feet behind the line.

Parents may in fact be better coaches than the assigned coaches. However, as long as we are the coaches, please restrict your game attendance role. to cheering everyone, and commiserating when our players make mistakes or let in goals.  Please do not tell your child to do something, or play somewhere contrary to what the coaches are telling them to do.

Please make every effort to have your daughters attend games and practices. If they are sick, or going to be out of town, or have some other event to attend, it would be very helpful if you could let me know.

PAST NOTES

There is no minimum level of skill needed to enjoy playing soccer. MSI welcomes everybody who wants to play - and guarantees everyone on the team the same amount of soccer playing time (at least half the game).  Every child brings to the team different qualities and the team melds their different abilities. And of course the more soccer games they play (and the more they practice), the better they all become.

The only "requirement" is that they should be enjoying playing soccer.   The only thing that is asked of the kids -- and requested that the parents make sure their own, understand -- is that when they comes to practices and games, they should be prepared to try their best; to listen to their coaches; and not to fool around, as occasionally occurred last season.

Over these past eight seasons, everyone has clearly made great progress, evolving from every player trying to kick the ball and concerned totally for herself; to every player learning what soccer is about, improving individually while playing increasingly, as a team (and not arguing who gets to kick the ball in!) While all the players came to the game with different levels of soccer skills, all the players have improved.

Every coach, including the Wayside United coaches, obviously have their own approach/idiosyncrasies, but the underlying approach should be that, while trying to make the players play as well as they can, and to do as best they can as a team, soccer should ultimately be treated as fun and all the kids should enjoy playing the world's most popular sport.

Basically, the children should take the games seriously, while they are playing; and they should not care at all, when the games are over.  And the coaches, after the games are over, should care even less about the results than do the players, be magnanimous when we win; be calm and gracious when we lose.  As you may have noticed from the reactions of some of the opposing coaches, even at this level, this is not always the case! I also speak from the experience of having coached my two other sons, and having observed on the opposing teams, all the different kinds of coaches, and their approaches to the game.

  MSI Recreational - Parental Responsibilities

  • Know the full name of your child's coach and have his/her telephone number handy.

  • Make sure that your child attends each practice and game, and notify the coach in the event of your child's absence.

  • Remind your child to take his/her soccer ball, shin guards, and water to each practice and game. Dress your child in weather-appropriate clothing.

  • Offer assistance and support to the coach by providing refreshments, setting up a telephone tree, setting up field equipment, or substituting in the coach's absence.

  • Assist the coach during practice to make sure that 2 adults are present on the field in the event of an emergency.

  • Demonstrate respect for the coach, all participants, and the referees. You must be an integral part of the MSI Sportsmanship Program by creating a positive environment for the players. Referees rate coaches, players, and spectators during games to identify superior and poor conduct.

 SPRING 2004  WELCOMES & FARWELLS

A warm welcome to Julia and Natasha &  a "welcome back" to  Rach!
A sad farewell to Elizabeth,  who was with the team from the very first day in First Grade!

FALL 2003 - CONCLUDING REMARKS

Congratulations to everyone on the team for overcoming a lot of adversity and for continuing to improve throughout the season. The way the team played in the final few games was so very different from the beginning of the season.

FALL 2003 OPENING REMARKS

FAREWELLS & WELCOMES

GOODBYES

Goodbye and many, many thanks to five of our players: Jessica, Kristen, Nisha, Miriam & Rachel
And goodbye, and much thanks, to co-coach, David Kalen after many seasons of co-coaching the team.

WELCOMES

Welcome to our four new players:
Maio Cabello; Kruvskaya Vidangos & Nora Elbehiery; Welcome "returning" player - after two or three years' absence - Shaina Lippman

Welcome Carol Maio and Jacob Lewis who are joining me as co-coaches

SPRING 2003 - CONCLUSION

A number of parents have asked about what's going to happen to the team, in the Fall.   The bottom line is that after much consideration, I have decided that I WILL definitely coach this team in the Fall, irrespective of whether or not my own daughter is on the team (which she may very well be)    I really do not want this team to fall apart, and I think it would be good to have a little stability, as our daughters move from Elementary to Middle School.   As far as I know, most people will be returning to this team in the Fall. (We will have to change our name from Wayside United to Hoover United???)
It is obviously not appropriate for me to discourage anyone from moving onto a Classic team, if you're  good enough and love soccer enough.  Every family has to decide for themselves what to do.  What you should take into account, should you get onto a Classic team:  these are not primarily-all-from-one-school teams; practices are twice a week, usually for an hour-and-a half - which obviously cuts into what other after-school activities you can do; and unlike MSI Recreation teams, a minimum amount of playing time is NOT guaranteed.
For people interested in returning, you have till the end of the month, to register, to be guaranteed on this team.  You can register online at
https://www.youthleaguesusa.net/msi/fall2003/Registration.html

From MSI - http://msisoccer.org/ June 30 Registration Deadline for returning players: Returning players are guaranteed placement on their current team if registered by June 30. Transfer requests received by June 30 will be honored on space available basis, with placement on current team guaranteed if transfer is not possible.

FALL 2002 - CONCLUSION

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE PLAYERS OF  WAYSIDE UNITED FOR COMPLETING THEIR HATTRICK OF DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIPS, BY WINNING THEIR THIRD SUCCESSIVE DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP.
IN THE FALL OF 2002, THE TEAM REMAINED UNDEFEATED, WITH SIX WINS AND A TIE ....THE FALL 2002 ACCOMPLISHMENT  FOLLOWED ON WINNING THE FALL 2001 & SPRING 2002 DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIPS!

 THANKS

Many thanks to all the girls on the team for all they have done - which included playing in positions, they may have felt they were not best suited at;  for trying their hardest; and for remaining good sports in both victory and defeat. Many thanks to David Kalen and Carol Maio for co-coaching the team. Thanks to all the parents for ensuring your daughters come to practice and get to the games early; and for bringing drinks and snacks (and of course, for not second-guessing the coaches!)

I freely acknowledge that some of the players' parents may, in fact, actually be better coaches than the team's designated coaches.  However, as long as John and I are the coaches, please restrict your game-attendance role, to cheering everyone, and commiserating when our players make mistakes, or let in goals.   Please do NOT, during the game shout to your child - or to other children on the team - to do something, or play somewhere, contrary to what the coaches are telling them to do. And always encourage your daughters to be good sports whether we win or lose.

Every coach, including the Hoover United coaches, obviously have their own approach/idiosyncrasies, but the underlying approach should be that, while trying to make the players play as well as they can, and to do as best they can as a team, soccer should ultimately be treated as fun and all the kids should enjoy playing the world's most popular sport.

FROM MSI "MSI RECREATIONAL SOCCER - PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITIES"

Know the full name of your child's coach and have his/her telephone number handy.
Make sure that your child attends each practice and game, and notify the coach in the event of your child's absence.
Remind your child to take his/her soccer ball, shin guards, and water to each practice and game. Dress your child in weather-appropriate clothing.
Offer assistance and support to the coach by providing refreshments, setting up a telephone tree, setting up field equipment, or substituting in the coach's absence.
Assist the coach during practice to make sure that 2 adults are present on the field in the event of an emergency.
Demonstrate respect for the coach, all participants, and the referees. You must be an integral part of the MSI Sportsmanship Program by creating a positive environment for the players. Referees rate coaches, players, and spectators during games to identify superior and poor conduct.
